Natural Family Portrait Tips: How to Get Kids to Smile and Relax
Timing is Everything for Happy Kids
As a Calgary family photographer, the most common mistake I see parents make is scheduling a session right during a child's nap time or shortly after school when they are burned out. A tired or hungry child is rarely going to give you that genuine, bright smile you are looking for. I always recommend picking a time when your little ones are at their best, usually mid-morning after they have had a solid breakfast and a good night's sleep.
If you have toddlers, consider how their routine fits into your family photography plans. If they are cranky at 4:00 PM, do not force a late afternoon sunset session just because it is trendy. You can find more expert advice on managing family schedules in my blog archives. Being mindful of their biological clock is the single biggest step toward ensuring the kids are cooperative and happy when it comes time to step in front of the camera.
Keep the Atmosphere Playful
Pressure is the enemy of a natural smile. When parents hover or constantly tell their kids to "say cheese," the result is usually a forced, tight grimace rather than a real expression. Instead, I encourage parents to play games, tell jokes, or engage in activities that make the children forget I am even holding a camera. According to the experts at Psychology Today, positive reinforcement and play are the best ways to keep children engaged in new environments.
It is my job as your photographer to capture the joy, so feel free to let go of the "perfect" pose. Sometimes the best portraits happen when you are running around or tickling your kids on the grass. You can learn more about my approach to capturing these candid moments by visiting my about page. When the focus shifts from "performing" to "having fun," the natural smiles start to appear on their own.
The best photos are the ones where you are laughing with your children, not just looking at the lens.
Preparation and Comfort Strategies
What your family wears has a huge impact on how they feel during the shoot. If your child is wearing a scratchy, stiff outfit that they hate, they will be uncomfortable and distracted the entire time. I always suggest choosing comfortable, coordinating clothing that allows your kids to move, sit, and play easily. It is also helpful to have a few bribes in your back pocket, provided they are not messy. A small piece of chocolate or a favorite toy can save the day if energy starts to dip. For more tips on preparing for a session, you can read up on the benefits of professional photography at Professional Photographers of America. Taking these small steps to ensure your kids feel comfortable and prepared will make the entire process significantly smoother.
